Around fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located numerous other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations show the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A senior official stated the attack rendered him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of migrant background in 2020.
