RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
