The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
