The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
